Due Process for Monsters???
05/07/10 5:14 AM

I'd like a GM to clarify the issue of Due Process for monsters.

The very spirit of the Blue "pitchfork" rules is that such a vast majority of the (largely unseen) population of Erie is so against Monsters that anyone, at any time, can outright gun down a monster without fear of criminal charges.

Why then do obvious Monsters get read the Miranda rights?
Why are they given medical attention in the hospital?
Why are tax-payer benefits going to the very creatures that tax-payers approve of being gunned down in the streets?
Why are they given due process?

THEY'RE MONSTERS!
You don't form a pitchform mob, run off and arrest Frankenstein's monster, read him his rights, provide an attorney, charge cops for undue force in his arrest, let him out on bail, etc, etc.

I'd like a GM to clarify. It's getting beyond frustrating being in the tiny minority who think (gasp! Shock!) that monsters shouldn't have legal rights.

To be honest, that's not really driven by GMs ... it's driven by how the players respond real time. And yes, I agree it's inconsistent with the mythos, but to the extent possible leave those types of decisions up to the players. It's your world!

What I would suggest is simple: respond ICly! Show up at the next council meeting and raise hell about it, or run for the city council and make a big deal about it. If you react ICly it will have far more lasting and interesting and fun impact.

My two cents anyway. Thanks for posting!

Professor,
If they don't even have the "right" to walk down the street without being attacked I don't see how they'd have any other rights.

Colleen,
Thank you for responding. However, there is a HUGE difference between the unseen Erie population (NPCs) and the actual player population (PCs). There's also a HUGE disparity between the views of the unseen population and the player population when it comes to monster rights. If it actually did go to a vote the unseen population would (in theory) overwhelmingly vote one way, but the player population would no doubt vote quite differently.

To highlight the problem, right now there's brutality charges being brought against the EISD by a known, open vampire for having holy water poured on her. The DA's office is handling the charges.

How the DA can refuse to press charges against the unseen population for pitchforking monsters in the streets, but then bring brutality charges against player population of police, is a situation I'm having trouble reconciling. I'd really like to see more of a correlation between how the public service groups (EISD, hospitals, fire, DA, etc) treat monsters and how the unseen population whom they serve supposedly sees them.

To respond more succinctly:

I just ask that people take the unseen Erie majority into account in matters like this. Unfortunately the unseen majority doesn't actually have a say, so it's up to the players to RP as though they do. Which means the organizations employed by the unseen majority should act in accord with that majority's wishes.

No due process for monsters!
