MULTIPLE FIRES

Erie Isle Fire Department

February 17, 2010

In the late-evening hours of Tuesday, February 16, around 7:00pm SLT, Erie Isle firefighters were alerted to reports of multiple fires burning around the fairground and western shoreline of the main island. Responding immediately, firefighters determined that all four of the guard towers constructed by the now-departed Omnimax Corporation were fully involved.

EIFD firefighters conducted rapid primary searches and, after establishing that no one was trapped in or near the burning structures, began defensive operations. After a fire attack of approximately 40 minutes, the individual blazes were doused and damage was prevented to any surrounding structures, vegetation or property.

Given the simultaneous nature of fire ignition, as well as threats of arson received earlier in the evening, the Fire Department and Sheriff's Department will work together to investigate this incident as one of potential arson.
