Erie Isle Greeters

Interested in becoming an Erie Isle greeter? This page will give you the details on how to get started, basics on what to do, and more!

What's this about

Like many clubs and other public venues in Second Life, Erie Isle employs greeters to help take care of incoming new people.  We have a small volunteer roleplay staff who are often best focused on facilitating roleplay in the sim.  Increasingly as Erie has grown, having our staff also coach first time visitors on the very basics has become unmanageable.  So a big part of the job of an Erie Isle greeter is to help newcomers ease into the sim, get connected with the needed groups, and understand the very basics of the rules.

Erie Isle greeters are paid $60L per hour, plus whatever tips they earn.  While they are "on the clock" they are expected to stay in the immediate vicinity of the sim entrance and be prepared to help out and meet new incoming people in the sim.  This is a great opportunity to help promote Erie Isle, help us retain players, and to earn a little money.

Basic Guidelines

Erie Greeters are expected to:

1) Introduce themself to new people as they come in the sim, and answer questions.

2) Assist new players with:

  • Getting and reading the basic getting started notecard
  • Pointing them to the website for more information
  • Helping them attach their Osiris meter and set up their characters if they are ready to do so
  • Explain the very basics of what the game is all about

3) For people who are very new to Second Life, point them to resources and information on the basics.

4) Treat all players with courtesy

5) Alert the staff to griefers or potential griefers

Much of the information you need and can point players to is located here in the Erie Isle wiki. If it's not, you can always raise a question in the Erie Isle Homeless group, and encourage incoming players to use that as a resource. To the extent possible we want to connect new players with old players, so that the RP staff can focus on generating roleplay. You can help by suggesting people, pointing folks in the right direction, connecting them with potential mentors.  The best place to do this is in the Homeless group.

We encourage you to be thoroughly familiar with the "Getting Started" and "Frequently Asked Questions" pages of this website, and as _you_ get asked questions, please add them to the F.A.Q. so others can benefit from that experience!

How to Become A Greeter

To become a greeter, contact a GM or the leader of the leader of the Homeless, Graine Windlow (notecards are preferable to IMs).  She'll ask you a number of questions to determine your basic knowledge of Erie, and can invite you to the group. You'll be asked you to go through a brief orientation, and she will also add you to the greeter staff database, which you must be assigned to before you'll be able to log into the tipjar.

Once added to the database, when you are ready to start, simply log into the tipjar at the Roleplay Resource Center.  It will handle the hourly pay as well as any tips.  Bear in mind: any tips you earn are yours, but we ask people not to solicit them.

You can also choose to stay logged out of the tipjar except when new players appear.  You'll be provided with the Erie Staff Hud, which will notify you when a new player enters the sim as long as you are in one of the Erie Isle regions. If a new player comes in, you can teleport to the entrance and assist them, then return to roleplay. However, if you aren't actually logged into the tipjar, the hourly pay won't apply.

Language Issues

What to do if people come to the sim who don't speak your language?

Osiris-CS includes a built in translator. We ask greeters to get familiar with it's operation so you can a) answer initial questions for people coming in the sim, and b) show the players how to use it.  When possible, we prefer players use the Osiris translator rather than an additional one, as that helps avoid lag in the sim.

Rules Issues

Generally if there is a rules issue: such as a child avatar in the sim, a griefer, or other similar issue, call in a GM as soon as possible to deal with it.  That's the primary focus of the GM staff. You can call for a GM in the Main or OOC groups any time, or by using the staff radio, which will also be provided.
